A Look at Heating Fuels, Kerosene, And Diesel Fuel

When purchasing fuels it’s important to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses with each kind. Kerosene and Diesel refer to specific types of fuels. On the other hand, “home heating fuels” refer to a broad category of fuels. Here is a brief breakdown of these types of fuels.

How fuels are made

Crude oil is made into different products via the process of altering their hydrocarbon compound chains. The chains are sorted by their boiling points, creating different types of fuel with different applications.

Different boiling points are used to separate these fuels. Fuels with higher boiling points settle at lower levels, lower boiling points settle at lower levels. As a result, propane and gasoline are created first, being lighter fuels. Then heavier fuels like heating fuels and diesel are made.

Diesel fuel

Diesel is a rough-and-ready fuel with a mid-tier boiling point. Unlike gasoline it does not require a high level of refining before use. This makes it cheap and useful for both generators and vehicles.

Heating fuels

Heating fuels on the other hand generally involve higher boiling points. Because of this they burn for longer. It is possible to use No. 1 and No. 2 diesels in the place of no. 4 heating oils, however. In a pinch kerosene can also be used for this purpose. No.4 and 6 Home heating fuel oils have a higher thermal unit output than other heating fuels or diesel.

Some considerations for winter

Kerosene is a fuel ideal for winter. It is largely unaffected by cold temperatures. Kerosene is very cost-effective since it can burn for long periods of time.

It is common for diesel to be supplemented by other fuels that are more resistant to the cold in order to prevent it from being adversely affected by winter conditions. Kerosene is traditionally added, though for extreme cold sometimes heating oils are used.
